CubaDupa weekend – steampunk events

We’ve mentioned a few different events during CubaDupa, but we thought it might be good to sum up Capital! Steampunk’s activities over the weekend in one (long) post. So here it is.

Some of our out-of-town visitors will be arriving on Friday (some even earlier), and it wouldn’t be a visit to Wellington without a trip to Hills Hats.  Hatman and the team have been very busy creating a retail shop in front of the factory and we’ll be among the first to see it – it might even be finished by Friday! The Hills Hats tour starts at 4pm on Friday 18 March at 30 Fitzherbert Street, Petone.  There’s likely to be a convoy heading out, so contact us if you need a ride.

After we’ve had our fill of hats we’ll head back to Welly to the Hawthorn Lounge, upstairs at 82 Tory Street, for cocktails from 6.30.  They might not have the full steampunk menu operating, but a Rusty Automaton is always possible.  Non-alcoholic drinks are readily available too.  After that we don’t have a dinner organised, but there are plenty of choices nearby.  We’ll work something out.

On Saturday morning at 11, meet at the top of the Cable Car (it comes up from Lambton Quay) to visit the Cable Car Museum (and have a photo shoot), then down into the city for a quick visit to our friends at Clockwork Emporium and a look at the marvellous clock in the Old Bank arcade (we’ll try to get there on the hour, but it’s worth coming back for if we miss it).

Some will be ready for lunch by then, and there are several options in and around the Old Bank before you head to CubaDupa.  Mrs. Hudson (the younger) and the Colonel will be performing a brisk tea duel in Cuba Mall between 1.15 and 1.30 before we dash back round the corner to Modelcrafts & Hobbies in Victoria Street for our premier event, Splendid Teapot Racing, from 2 – 4pm.

More tea duelling will follow in Cuba Mall at 4.15 (that’s going to be a rush!) and 6.30.  CubaDupa itself continues until midnight with non-stop entertainment and food.

On Sunday we have more tea duels in Cuba Mall at 12 and 1pm, followed by the second burst of Splendid Teapot Racing, again from 2 – 4.  CubaDupa wraps up until next year at 5pm.

It’s going to be a pretty full weekend.  You can find the full CubaDupa programme at cubadupa.co.nz.  Our advice is to throw yourself in.  You can always sleep at work on Monday …
