Vive les théières de course splendides!*
If your French extends to little more than ‘oo la la’, let us explain:
The new Wairarapa steampunk group, WaiSteam, have asked Capital! Steampunk to join them over the Rimutakas for this year’s French Country Fair at the Tauherenikau Racecourse between Featherston and Greytown. There will be a Splendid Teapot Racing demonstration and tea duelling (the latter possibly involving a few Wairarapa mayors, vying to prove whose town is the best). WaiSteam has even gone so far as to challenge us for the Splendid Teapot Racing Challenge Trophy, which will be contested by our respective champions at High Noon (cue atmospheric music, redolent with tumbleweeds and sweaty saddles). This will be the first time this trophy has been competed for, so come along to see the battle (who knows – maybe both teapots on the course at once, with strict rules about politeness, might add a little je ne sais quoi).
We went to the French Country Fair last year and it’s a great relaxed day out, with market stalls and lots of good food (and wine – it’s the Wairarapa, after all). There’ll be ample promenading opportunities along with the tea-related activities. We aim to get there around 11am to allow a nice relaxed setup time for the teapot racing from 12.
Note that the fair runs for both days of the weekend; we’re going just for Sunday 3rd, but by all means show up in your steampunkery on the Saturday as well if you’re keen and/or close.
As always, let us know if you need or can offer a ride. The Colonel and Mrs. Hudson (the younger) won’t be able to oblige this time, unfortunately – we’ll have a car full of ramps and other paraphernalia.
* Long live the splendid racing teapots!
